Late one morning, when the tide was low, a mother
otter led her three cubs over the rocks and the seaweed to the
shoreline. “It is time now for your first swimming lesson,” she
said. “You'll love swimming.”
But the little otters
are not so certain, and as their mother starts to pick them up
one by one and carry them into the water, the littlest
escapes. He suns himself on a rock, and falls asleep. Some time
later, he is suddenly woken by the sound of his family whistling
to him. The tide has come in and water has surrounded his rock.
He looks around anxiously for another rock to jump on to, but he’s
trapped! Now he must make a decision…
‘This book is wonderful. The illustrations have captured exactly what otters are like!’
GRACE YOXTON, INTERNATIONAL OTTER SURVIVAL FUND
‘Beautiful, luminous illustrations. Young children will identify with the feelings of apprehension…It is always disconcerting when you feel unable to attempt something everyone seems to imagine you will do easily. Children…will appreciate the sympathetic understanding shown to the otter and be reassured by the eventual happy resolution.’ BOOKS FOR KEEPS
‘This delightful picture book…is a fun story and contains two pages of factual information about otters, giving it an educational aspect.’ SCHOLAR
‘Young children will identify with, and learn about, real animals in this book. The movement of the otters…is beautifully captured in Adrienne Kennaway’s studied paintings.’ CAROUSEL
‘A very satisfying, multi-layered experience for young readers. Many children will identify with this story.’ SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL
