Venus Spring smashed a branch away from her face and ran on. Her legs wobbled with exhaustion, but her feet carried her forward. Mud splattered against her soaked tracksuit bottoms and jagged stones scuffed her trainers. Ahead of her, at the end of the twisting gravel path, she could see a mesh of rope.

The man turned round to face Venus with a start but he was too late. Venus’s feet thudded against the top section of the perimeter wall, allowing her to grab the man’s jacket and pull it as hard as she could. He let out a startled cry as they tumbled down together and crashed on to the hedge.

When DCI Radcliff hears a rumour that a gang intends to kidnap teen movie star Tatiana Fairfleet, she asks Venus to act as Tatiana’s body double at her boarding school – providing a decoy if there are any problems.
